Why Frangibility Is Critical at Every Airport
Design, manufacturing and installation of visual and non-visual aids — such as approach lighting towers, meteorological equipment, and radio navigational aids — are critical for safety and airworthiness. Various visual and non-visual aids are located near runways, taxiways, and aprons at airports, where they may pose a hazard to aircraft in the event of an accident during landing, take-off, or ground manoeuvring.
How Frangibility Protects Aircraft & Crew
All such equipment and their supports should be frangible and mounted as low as possible to prevent losing control of the aircraft in the event of an impact. This frangibility is achieved through the use of lightweight materials and the inclusion of breakaway or failure mechanisms.
Lightweight Materials: All frangible structures are built using FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) and fiberglass — materials that are structurally strong under normal conditions but break predictably on aircraft impact.
Breakaway Mechanisms: Precision-engineered failure points allow the object to break, distort, or yield when struck — ensuring the aircraft is not deflected or damaged beyond the initial contact.
Low Mounting Requirement: ICAO requires all airport equipment near runways to be mounted as low as possible — minimising the risk to aircraft that stray off the runway or taxiway surface.
