What Is Frangibility & Why It Matters
All equipment and their supports near runways, taxiways, and aprons at airports should be frangible and mounted as low as possible to prevent losing control of aircraft in the event of an impact during landing, take-off, or ground manoeuvring.
This frangibility is achieved through the use of lightweight materials and/or the inclusion of breakaway or failure mechanisms that allow the object to break, distort, or yield when struck — ensuring the safety of the aircraft and its occupants.

Why Frangibility Is Critical at Airports
Design, manufacturing and installation of visual and non-visual aids — such as approach lighting towers, meteorological equipment, and radio navigational aids — are critical for safety and airworthiness at every airport.
Runway Proximity: Various visual and non-visual aids are located near runways, taxiways, and aprons — where they may pose a hazard to aircraft during landing, take-off, or ground manoeuvring.
